OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

Neurological conditions

- Neurological rehabilitation commonly consists of upper limb rehabilitation (strength, coordination and sensation of the arm), cognition rehabilitation (memory, planning and problem solving, mood and behaviour changes), balance retraining, activity modification and adaptive equipment.
- Conditions include but not limited to: stroke, brain injuries, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, guillian-barre syndrome, myasthenia gravis.

Ageing and falls

- Difficulty completing tasks or reduced participation in community activities due to age-related decline or falls?
- OT can help through provision of education, trialling adaptive equipment and activity modification.

Pain

- Chronic pain is pain that has lasted for at least 3 months, regardless of the initial cause.  Pain is often extremely debilitating for the person experiencing it. If this pain is impacting the way that you complete your daily activities, or preventing you from participating in some activities, occupational therapy can help.
- OT is likely to consist of a combination of education and activity modification.

Chronic
Conditions

- Symptoms of chronic conditions can often impact on the day-to-day tasks of the individual, and can frequently fluctuate. These may include: fatigue, pain, muscle weakness, impaired balance, difficulty sleeping, challenges with intimacy, etc.
- Occupational therapy can help through the provision of education, activity modification and adaptive equipment.

Who Is Identity OT?

Angela is an experienced occupational therapist, with over 12 years experience in the public health system. Much of this experience is in community-based rehabilitation, especially rehabilitation after a stroke, and post accident or illness. Angela graduated with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy from La Trobe University in 2011, and subsequently completed a PostGraduate Masters of Clinical Rehabilitation (Neurological Occupational Therapy) at Flinders University.

Identity OT believes that encompassed each individual is the life roles and activities that they participate in, forming who they are as a person i.e their identity. When something happens, be it accident, illness, or ageing that prevents a person from participating in these activities and fulfilling these roles in the way that they would like, this can impact a person's sense of self.

Identity Occupational Therapy develops through assessment and effective listening, a thorough understanding of each client and their unique needs. Therapy is focused on working towards the goals set collaboratively with each client, using a variety of evidence-based techniques.
